History

At the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Plant Pathology began to be taught in 1931 in the Department of Agriculture of the Faculty of Science. The course was first taught by Dimitrios Kavadas, who had served as Director of the Pelion Plant Pathology Station since 1922. Following the establishment of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry in 1937, the Plant Pathology Laboratory was founded, and I. Saregiannis was appointed to its staff. He remained in the position until his dismissal in 1942. During the period 1950–1957, Plant Pathology was taught by Associate Professor P. Kritopoulos, while the Laboratory was directed by I. Koronaios, an entomologist. In 1957, Ch. Zambetakis was appointed as Associate Professor and served until his resignation in 1963. During the academic years 1963–1965, teaching responsibilities were undertaken by Associate Professor G. Themelis, while the Laboratory was directed by Th. Raptopoulos, Professor of Pomology. In 1965, Dimitrios Zachos, a student of Saregiannis, was elected Professor of Plant Pathology and remained in the position until his retirement in 1987. With the exception of the period 1937–1942, the appointment of Zachos in 1965 effectively marked the beginning of the Laboratory’s sustained scientific research activity.

Throughout its 89-year history, the Plant Pathology Laboratory of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has not only provided pioneering education to agricultural science students but has also developed a productive research program. This is evidenced by its extensive publication record in Greek and, especially, prestigious international scientific journals, as well as by the active participation of its members in national and international scientific conferences. Its research covers a broad spectrum of topics, primarily in the fields of plant pathological mycology and virology. From its inception, the Laboratory’s academic and research staff included specialists in both Mycology and Virology. To date, the Laboratory has awarded 30 doctoral degrees and more than 80 master’s degrees, while annually attracting numerous undergraduate students to undertake thesis projects. At the same time, the Laboratory has established research collaborations with private-sector organizations, including companies involved in the production and marketing of plant protection products, propagation material enterprises, agricultural cooperatives, and producers’ associations. In addition, it provides plant disease diagnostic services and offers disease management recommendations to individual growers, thereby directly supporting the country’s agricultural production sector at its foundation.
