Research Field
Soil genesis and classification, soil mapping, problematic soils, soil resources degradation and restoration, soil quality, land suitability evaluation, precision agriculture
History
The Laboratory of Applied Soil Science was established in 1964. Through the years it performed significant work in applied and basic research. As a result a vast number of papers has been published in National and International scientific journals.
While in the first two decades the Laboratory was involved mainly in scientific issues relating to agriculture, the last decade is systematically occupied in environmental scientific issues and more specifically in the pollution and soil degradation.
Teaching Activities
The Laboratory covers the undergraduate and postgraduate level of the Faculty of Agriculture in the area of degraded soils, soil genesis, mapping, and classification and instrumental chemical analysis. At the same time the Laboratory organises conferences, seminars and other educational events by itself or in co-operation with other agencies and laboratories.

Research Activities
- Monitoring, evaluation, management of natural resources and protected areas at catchment area level
- Degradated soils.
- Soil mapping (especially in viticultural areas).
- Soil quality and Site Specific Management
- Evaluation of soil resources pollution and degradation.
- Soil genesis and classification
- Agro environmental pressure and impact indicators on natural resources and ecosystems.
- Methods and technologies for soil and water restoration.
- Management and restoration of wetland ecosystems.
- Constructed wetlands and amelioration of point and non-point source pollution.
Facilities and Equipment
The Laboratory is fully equipped for conducting surveys, monitoring and evaluation of land and aquatic ecosystems.
The equipment includes instruments for conducting mapping and specialised measurements of soil and water quality, pollution and degradation in situ and in the laboratory along with the use of remote sensing tools and software (GIS).
